Ocean County Jail Roster

The Ocean County Jail Inmate Roster is a public resource that allows anyone to check if a specific individual is in custody at the county jail in the state of New Jersey. The website OceanCourt.us provides publicly accessible information about current and recently released inmates. Additionally, data is available through the official page of the Ocean County Department of Corrections, by phone, or during a personal visit to the facility. The roster is maintained by the Ocean County Department of Corrections; the database is regularly updated and hosted on a separate inmate search portal. This tool ensures transparency in the criminal justice system and allows citizens to track the status of detained individuals.

Search Current Inmates in Ocean Jail

To find information about a person held in Ocean County Jail, use one of the methods below.

Online Search

  1. Go to the Inmate Lookup Tool — the official county inmate search portal.
  2. Select an identifier for the search: last name, first name, or County ID number.
  3. Enter the data and click the "Search" button.
  4. The system will display results for individuals currently in custody. There is also an option to include released inmates in the search results.

To start the search, you will need the person's full legal last name or booking number. Juvenile offenders are not displayed in the public registry.

Additionally, at OceanCourt.us, you can search for publicly available information about court cases and records related to county inmates.

By Phone

Call the Ocean County Jail and inquire about the status of a specific individual. Prepare the full name or booking number — this will speed up the process.

For information about inmate court hearings, you can also contact the Sheriff's Judicial Services Division, where officers escort detainees to the courtroom.

Find Ocean Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created when a detained person is officially registered at the jail. It is the first document that records a person's custody.

During the booking process, the following data is generated:

  • Unique booking number
  • Date and time of intake
  • Charges presented
  • Arresting agency
  • Basic identification data of the detainee

Some of this information can be viewed through the online inmate search tool. The amount of data publicly available is limited — typically, the name, charges, and custody status are displayed.

If you need complete booking records or document copies, submit a request for public records in accordance with the Open Public Records Act (OPRA). The request is directed to the Ocean County Department of Corrections. Some records may be restricted according to state law — for example, medical information or data about minors is not disclosed.

To search for criminal cases related to a detained person, use the PROMIS/Gavel Public Access portal — it contains information about cases being heard in the New Jersey Supreme Court.

Search the Ocean Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The official Ocean County inmate search tool supports two main methods.

Search by Last Name

Enter the last name in the appropriate field. Optionally, add the first name to narrow the results. A few tips:

  • Check the spelling — even one mistake can lead to no results.
  • If the last name is common (e.g., Smith or Johnson), be sure to include the first name.
  • Try spelling variations if the last name has an unusual transliteration.

Search by Booking Number

If you know the County ID or booking number, select the appropriate identifier from the dropdown menu and enter the value. This method is the most accurate and returns only one record.

What to Do if the Search Yields No Results

The absence of results does not always mean the person is free. Possible reasons:

  • The person has not yet been fully registered — there is a time lag between physical detention and the appearance of the record in the database.
  • The person has already been released. Check the "Include released inmates" option if available.
  • The last name is entered incorrectly or does not match the legal name in the documents.
  • The person is held in another facility or transferred to the federal system.

If none of the options work, call the jail directly at (732) 929-2032 to clarify the detainee's status.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Ocean

The Ocean County inmate database is updated regularly, but it is not an instantaneous process. There is usually a time lag between the physical intake of a detainee and the appearance of their record in the online system — from a few hours to a day, depending on the facility's workload and time of day.

Consider a few limitations:

  • The roster primarily reflects the current inmate population. It is not a complete archive of all individuals ever held in custody.
  • After release, the record may disappear from search results unless the option to view released inmates is selected.
  • Data entry delays occur, especially on weekends or during mass arrests.
  • Information about transfers to other facilities may not be displayed immediately.

The roster does not replace official court documentation. For complete information about a criminal case, use the Find a Case portal on the New Jersey court system website or contact the Ocean County Court at 120 Hooper Avenue, Toms River. If you need archival records or copies of court documents, a request can be submitted through the Superior Court Clerk's Office.
